Father's Day

As I celebrate Father's Day in Houston away from my dad and my girls, I am so thankful for the gift of my dad! He has been and continues to be a great model of grace to me and my family!

He didn't tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it.
~Clarence Budington Kelland

As a father myself, I hope that I can honor my father by fathering my girls with similar grace. It's still overwhelming for me to think that God has entrusted four beautiful and gifted ladies to Amy and me.

I love my girls! I love being with them, doing nothing, doing something, celebrating their accomplishments, drying their tears, encouraging them to never give up, pointing them to Jesus, challenging them to think through things, helping them think deeply about life and their place in God’s Kingdom work, hearing about their day, receiving a text, talking on the phone, Skyping when they are away, giving them gifts, holding them and letting them know it will be OK, speaking the truth, goofing around, providing for them, surprising them, worshipping with them and praying with them, talking with them about what they’re learning in God’s Word, laughing with them, and …..

Here’s something I’ve noticed lately: all these things, while they may be a blessing for my girls, really are blessings for me too! And in that respect, every day with my girls is father’s day! Could it be that this is the way our Heavenly Father designed it to be with our dads? And, could it be that this is the way He designed it to be with Him? After all, one of the identifying names given to God in the Scriptures is “Father”.

Thank you, Lord, for dads who go first; for dads who show us how to follow You; who not only tell us and instruct us on how to live, but live in obedience to You; who know that You are their perfect, everlasting Father. Thank you, Lord, for dads who are blessed with our presence, and for dads who are present with You! Amen.
